The Spanish Empire consisted of all the Spanish speaking countries of Latin America, that is: *Nearly all of Central America. *South America (without Brazil and the Guyana area). *Some of the Carribean Islands, including Cuba and Puerto Rico. *Also, large areas of what became part of the the US, including: CA, NV, NM and parts of TX and CO. Up until the early 19th Century, Spain controlled much of the Caribbean, North and South America. I will use current country boundaries to illustrate. They did not control Brazil, Portugal did, but they controlled all of South and Central America. All of the North American west, what we now know as the land West and North-West of (and including) Texas and also Florida. In the Early 19th Century many countries began to declare independence as the Monroe Doctrine took effect, European's hold on their empire weakened, and America's remarkable revolution shone as an example of success.
