The Confederates. But the Confederate commander, Braxton Bragg, failed to follow up by pursuing the routed Union forces. Then he laid a poorly conducted half-siege to Chattanooga, where the Yankees retreated. Then he divided his force, sending off almost half his army in an ill-conceived campaign to recapture Knoxville. The Yankees meanwhile had brought in Grant to take over in Chattanooga, and when Grant attacked to break the siege Bragg no longer had sufficient strength to contain the Federals. So, in the long run, the advantages of the Confederate's smashing victory at Chickamauga were wasted. This editorial on the battle is ill-founded.

Bragg's personalty problems bring he and General James Longstreet into a feud. This requires Jefferson Davis to arrive from Richmond to mediate the dispute.

Yes, it came close to destroying the Union army to its front, but turned out to be the

last Confederate victory in the West. It was the greatest victory the South had in the Western Theater.

The commanding generals were for the North William S. Rosecrans, for the South Braxton Bragg. Each had several dozen other generals to command units within their armies. See "Related Links" below for complete Orders of Battle of both sides, which will provide you with the names of general officers commanding corps, divisions and brigades in each army.

The battle of Chickmauga was a much needed victory for the South in the US Civil War. The battle took place on September 19 to the 20th in 1863. The Confederate victory there allowed the South to gain control of Chattanooga, Tennessee, which was a main rail center. This was of tactical importance. The victory was due for the most part because of the transfer by railroad of General Longstreet's forces in Virginia to reinforce General Bragg.

Many historians believe that if Bragg had pursued the Union forces, it would have added more victories and lengthened the war.

This is exactly what the South wanted as it believed Northern public opinion would have increased to the point of a cease fire and the end of the efforts by Lincoln to continue this horrible war.

On December 29, 1862, General Sherman's force of 25,000 troops tried an unsuccessful assault at Chickasaw Bluffs. Sherman made the mistake of using a frontal assault against 14,000 entrenched Confederates.
