Langston Hughes was devoted to promoting equality and social justice through his poetry, to celebrating African American culture and heritage, and to advocating for civil rights for all marginalized communities.
In "Democracy" by Langston Hughes, some literary devices used are imagery (e.g. "I tire so of hearing people say, let things take their course") to create vivid mental pictures, personification (e.g. "democracy will not come") to give human-like qualities to democracy, and repetition (e.g. "I tire so") to emphasize the speaker's frustration.
In Langston Hughes' short story "Thank You, M'am," the phrase "a shoe got by devilish ways will burn your feet" is a metaphor suggesting that things obtained through dishonest or unethical means will ultimately lead to negative consequences or harm. Mrs. Jones uses this expression to teach Roger a lesson about the importance of honesty and integrity.
In "One Christmas Eve" by Langston Hughes, the technique used to shape the story about racism is primarily through character interactions and dialogue. Hughes showcases the impact of racism through the experiences and emotions of the characters, demonstrating the societal injustices and prejudices they face. This technique helps convey the message of unity, empathy, and resistance against racism.
