The beginning of the movie depicts the landing of the 29th Infantry Division and parts of the 2nd Ranger Battalion. The 29th Division did land on Omaha Beach.
However, in the movie, Private James Francis Ryan was the paratrooper who Captain Miller was sent to locate and return safely home. Technically, Private Ryan landed with the 101st Airborne Division and landed near the town of Neuville.
It takes place on OMAHA beach in Normandy.
Omaha
The scene takes place on the beaches of Normandy France, during Operation Overlord. Beach name was code named: Omaha.
The fact that he got shot! Otherwise the beach landing scene at the start and the sniper scene later are the two that stand out for me.
In the movie, Saving Private Ryan, there was NO German soldier with a dog. However, there is a reference to Dog Green Sector of Omaha Beach which is where the landing scene of the film "Saving Private Ryan" was set. There was also a scene when Miller's men are sorting American GI "dog tags". But no dog (animal).
3mins
The opening scene takes place in present day when an older Veteran and his family is strolling through the American Cemetery at Collieville sur Mur. Then the scene flashes back to the war when the 29th Infantry Division and the Rangers are making an amphibious landing on the coast of Normandy during the D-Day invasionon 6 June 1944. "Saving Private Ryan" is a fictional story that is partially (and remotely) based upon an event where a paratrooper was ordered to be sent back home because of a death of either his brother or his Mother.

If you are referring to the movie Saving Private Ryan the glider scene is based off of true events in which Brigadier General Amend was killed due to security precautions weighing down the glider causing a violent landing.
Harrison Young as Ryan in present day (as an old man) .
The movie Saving Private Ryan is a fictional WWII film, whose first battle scene occurs on June 6, 1944--D-Day.
The opening scene on the beach is a representation of D- Day, June 6, 1944. It is said to accurately reflect what happened on that day- the amphibious landing, paratroopers dropped behind German lines, the injuries that soldiers suffered, etc.
They were used to make "sticky bombs" to take the tracks of panzer tanks.
