Detective novels were the most popular choice of reading , followed by ` Boy`s Own ` type novels , daring deeds of do or die . The so called ` Penny Dreadfuls ` were popular with the masses , many novels were published in serial form to sell newspapers , Conan Doyle `s ` Holmes stories were the most popular, I think the reason for this could be because of Doyle`s astute observations to the crimes Holmes was investigating . Doyle himself became weary of Holmes , and killed him off , but due to public demand he resurrected the famous detective, Perhaps also in 1888 the Whitechapel murders gripped the public imagination ( Jack the Ripper ) Also it was a time when people read more , being no T.V etc
Through my research, I would say that ''Detective novels'' were the most popular choice of book to read, because there was alot of detective work going on around 1901, so people found it interesting to read about what its actually like to be a detective, as some of the novels were in first person. But, certain people also enjoyed reading about the sidekick...

Different people would interpret this differently, and there is no generally accepted rule (as the fact that you have asked the question indicates). Of the two suggestions you offer, I would prefer the former. However, to avoid ambiguity I would reword it altogether and say something like 'around the year 1900'. Sometimes the context makes it clear - if you have been talking about the 1890s then say 'at the turn of the 19th century' it will be obvious that you mean 19th to 20th. (You could drop the '19th' altogether in that case.) Other constructions may be clear but they read a bit clumsily: 'the turn of the 19th/20th century'; 'the turn of the 19th/20th centuries'; 'the turn of the 19th to 20th century'. Better to reword, I think.

Contemporary fiction is a work of fiction that takes place in modern times. Realistic fiction is a work of fiction that's possible. It could really happen and isn't fantasy. This could be romance or mystery depending on the events in the story. Put the two together and you have contemporary realistic fiction.

Dystopian fiction became popular at the end of the 20th century due to increasing concerns about societal issues such as technology, surveillance, environmental degradation, and government control. These themes resonated with readers as they reflected real-world anxieties and allowed for exploration of potential futures shaped by these challenges. Additionally, dystopian stories provided a way to comment on contemporary society and provoke thought about the direction of humanity.
