The United States government is dominated by a two party political system. The Democratic Party can be described as being as socially and fiscally liberal. The Republican Party follow conservative ideologies geared toward social conservatism, and fiscal restraint, however they generally favor strong national defence expenditures.
There is no particular choice, however, the two party system in the US has worked well over the past one hundred years and more. Each party has certain commonalities such as the belief that the US Constitution is a good governing document. Both parties also believe that the free markets in the US promote good economic health. The parties therefore are only slightly different when it comes to taxation and spending. Those two factors are influenced by current or perceived economic health. It is safe to say that most Americans find comfort with both parties. That is why the two party system simply applies checks and balances against each other.
