This was Paul, who, as Saul (the Jewish version of his name) persecuted the early Church. Saul was a well-respected temple leader - a Pharisee - and an expert in Jewish Law. He hated the new 'sect' founded on the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and was one of the ringleaders who organised the persecution and extermination of Christians.
On the road to Damascus to round up more Christians there for persecution, he had a vision where he saw the risen Christ and was temporarily blinded. As a result of that experience he became converted himself and became known as Paul. He went on to become an apostle, founding many Christian Churches across the Roman Empire, and writing letters of encouragement to them. Over half of the New Testament in the Bible is made up of Paul's letters to various churches across the Mediterranean area.
