The Metalmark butterfly has antennae, eyes, wings and legs. It uses these body parts for sensing vibrations, seeing, flying and standing.
They keep the engine and all the other moving parts from scraping together and going kaboom from overheating. The lubricating system primarily keeps the moving parts from rubbing each other too much.

A simple machine doesn't have any moving parts.
Paint can not protect moving parts as it is not smooth or oily enough. Moving parts that are extremely close together need polymer oils to keep them moving.
Lubricating them with products such as WD-40. It's something which needs to be done regularly.
