In 1867, a Major Genera Emory Upton made a substantial contribution to US military manuals. It was called a New look, and appropriately titled A New System of Infantry Tactics, Double and Single Rank adapted to American Topography and Improved Firearms. Upton had been a successful general in the Summer campaigns in Virginia in 1864. In his publication, Upton expresses his impatience with the standard European tactics manuals. In it, as the title suggests, it was geared to the specific problems that the American topography presented to Civil War generals. The value in his work was not that he anticipated another civil war, but that it was a guide for the US Army if they encountered terrain similar to the American terrain on a foreign battlefield.
