the two terms are directly related. the white man believed that African Americans were a lower class to them. they believed that they were superior to them, so they enslaved them and used them for work.
Racism has been around for as long as history. People have always had the tendency to have views of 'us' vs 'others.' Whatever that 'others' were depended on the time and cultures.
Slavery led to racism in the Americas because the slaves began to be seen as nothing but slaves, their lack of experience in the real world rendered them very naive, and their culture was much different from the White's. That, combined with the ignorance of the slave owners which was compounded with things like Jim Crowe and the general atmosphere that the slaves were the inferior servants led to racism.

Racism was abolished partially in the 1930's when the slavery famine began to die down but there is still lots of racism going on today!
