you need power steering fluid.
There are two possibilities when it comes to a squeaking sound when turning. The main reasons are a bad power steering pump, or a steering linkage issue.

ball joints or tie rods
Its the bushings on your suspension, It will cost $200 dollars to replace at a shop.
could be the power steering belt, axle going bad. power steering pump it self could also be bad.
The most common cause for a squeaking noise when turning the steering wheel on any vehicle, including a 2001 Toyota Avalon, is the belt that runs the power steering pump. If the belt is fairly new, a small drop of any dish soap on the belt while the car is running will clear up the noise. If the belt is worn, it needs to be replaced.
I don't know exaclty, but I'm finding out the hard way! I have a 2001 Highlander and the steering wheel was 'squeaking.' I took it in and the shop lubed it for $25. This was summer of 2007. Since then the squeaking has come back and the steering wheel has gotten stiff. I just took my car in for new timing belt (scheduled maintenence) and found out that I'm now looking at $1,200 to fix the steering. If I could go back I would've gotten rid of it, but now I'm stuck with a big loan and a not so sound Highlander.
Most likely it is low power steering fluid. Check fluid and see if noise goes away.
could be struts and or strut brg plate that mounts the strut at the top
