It's a EPA requirement to keep any topsoil from entering the storm sewer in case of heavy rains.

When the site is under construction allot of bare dirt is exposed and can be quickly

washed into the storm sewer system.

Black fabric fences built that are about two feet high and are buried into the ground. They are called silt fences.

Stiff fines can come from the EPA to the contractor if they do not take the proper measures for erosion control.

Erosion is a three part process. First soil particials are disloged from the soil other soil particails, second the loose soil particials are suspended in water and transported away from the site of orgin, and the third step in the process is when the velosity of the water slows enough that the soil particial will settle out. Erosion can be controled at any of these 3 points but as with anything it is easiest to stop with the first step. In order to control the dislodging of soil particials you can do a couple of things, reduce the raindrop inpact engery or reduce the engery of the water that is running over the soil surface. In order to do either of these things you must have some sort of protection at the soil surface. This is done by keeping the soil from being bare. This is accomplished by keeping vegetation on the soil such as grass or small grains. If the soil sis bear such as a comstruction you caqn place staw or excelsior netting down. If the soil particials are already suspended you can use material such as stone or other material that slows down the speed of the water so that the soil particiales will settleout prior to reaching somewhere that they will cause enviromental damage such as a wetland or stream.

Mass grading, Pollutants, Compost, Vegetation, and Slope Drains can be done to reduce soil erosion since it occurs naturally.
