Texas Horned Lizards (Phrynosoma cornutum) feed primarily on harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex ssp.), also called red harvester ants.

Harvester ants build large colonies that can extend several meters underground and several meters in diameter. Colonies in the plains and prairies of the United States are typically formed in open grasslands, and exposed to direct sunlight. Harvester ants remove the vegetation in a circular area, extending several feet around the colony entrance. Prominent foraging trails may also been seen to extend 100 yards or more in a radial pattern from the center of the colony. Harvester ants are also found in the desert and in lightly forested areas. In lightly forested areas where sunlight over the nest is not constant, the colony may take on a volcano or mound shape, covered in small rocks the ants have placed around the mound. These rocks aid in keeping the colony warm by retaining the heat absorbed by the reduced sunlight the colony experiences in a location with overhead foliage.
