∙ 8y agoOnly certain prescription medications such as those which treat gastrointestinal issues will cause a false positive. As will certain health conditions such as diabetes. You need to indicate to your employer that you are taking certain medications or have a medical condition prior to the test taking place.
Many people believe non-prescription medication such as ibuprofen causes false positives, which is a myth.
It is also possible to get a false positive by being around a heavy user and inhaling their second-hand smoke. Even though you were not taking the drug yourself, you were still inadvertently inhaling the fumes.

∙ 8y agoIn today's world, where science has advanced drug testing to the extent that even attempts to cover up drugs in your system, a false positive for THC in a drug test is extremely rare. The chances of getting a false positive are less than 2%.
Bear in mind that even being in the company of a drug user, you can still get drugs into your system via second-hand smoke.
Contrary to popular belief, painkillers such as ibuprofen (and other NSAID-type drugs) do not cause a false THC positive. And employers know this.
However, some drugs do. But these particular drugs are prescription-only drugs which are only available via a doctor. If you are taking any of those drugs, it should be indicated in your employment medical file, in which case you would have been asked to take a different type of test or be allowed to skip testing all together. These cause false THC positives:
- Esomeprazole. Prescription medication used to treat peptic ulcer disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
- Dexlansoprazole. Prescription medication used to treat stomach diseases.
- Efavirenz. Prescription medication used in HIV treatment.
- Marinol. Prescription medication that contains a small amount of THC. Used to treat eating conditions in people with AIDs.
- Meclomen. Prescription medication used to treat mild Arthritis.
- Naproxen. Prescription drug prescribed for arthritis and severe migraines.
- Navo-naprox. Prescription drug used to treat arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and tendinitis.
- Omeprazole. Prescribed and used in hospitals to treat gastrointestinal diseases.
- Promethazine. Prescription drug to treat mild to severe Allergies.
- Rabeprazole. prescription drug used to treat stomach ulcers.
Some health conditions also cause false positives:
- Liver Disease
- Diabetes
If you believe the positive was false, you will need to get an independent drug test from a doctor, if you cannot request a re-test from your employer. The quicker the better, otherwise they will say in their defence that you have plenty of time to clear your system. if you are in trouble, at risk of arrest or at risk of your employment contract being terminated, speak to a lawyer for advice. Legal advice differs depending on geographical region.
