A triple point is a point where any substance can exist in solid, liquid, and gas forms. It results from a combination of pressure and temperature specific every material. At water's triple point, it can exist as ice, liquid water, or water vapor.

The single combination of pressure and temperature at which liquid water, solid ice, and water vapour can coexist in a stable equilibrium occurs at exactly 273.16 K (0.01 °C) and a partial vapour pressure of 611.73 pascals (ca. 6.1173 millibars, 0.0060373 atm). At that point, it is possible to change all of the substance to ice, water, or vapor by making arbitrarily small changes in pressure and temperature. Even if the total pressure of a system is well above triple point of water, provided the partial pressure of the water vapour is 611.73 pascals then the system can still be brought to the triple point of water. Strictly speaking, the surfaces separating the different phases should also be perfectly flat, to abnegate the effects of surface tensions.

The triple point of something is the pressure and temperature at which a substance can exist in equilibrium in the liquid, solid and gaseous states. The triple point of pure water is 0.01 degrees Celsius and 4.58 millimeters of Mercury and this is normally used to calibrate thermometers.

Triple point of water:

6.1173 millibars, 0.0060373057 atm). Simply put, the triple point of water is the only temperature at which water can exist in all three states of matter; solid (ice), liquid (water), and gas (water vapour). This temperature is 0.01°C.

How many phases of water are in equilibrium at the triple point?

Triple = 3

Why is 0 degree Celsius called as triple point?

In triple point, all phases of water, vapour,Liquid water and ice is @ equilibrium.

What is triple point water?

The triple point of water is zero degree Celsius this is because 1)zero degree Celsius is the melting point of ice. 2)water changes from liquid to solid in zero degree Celsius.

What happens at triple point?

One interesting use is to define a temperature standard - the triple point of water (or any substance, for that matter) is at a very precise temperature. On the other hand, the melting point or the boiling point depends on pressure. One interesting use is to define a temperature standard - the triple point of water (or any substance, for that matter) is at a very precise temperature. Water at 0 degree is in which state?

Until recently, this would have been, by definition, the triple point - where water is in three states (solid, liquid or vapour). However, the defined temperature for triple point is now 0.01oC. However, for practical purposes water is at the triple point and could be in any of the three states.

What is the triple point of water and why is it called the triple point?

triple point of water is chosen as standard fixed point because in this point it represent a unique value of pressure and temperature at which solid, liquid, gases states of the substance are equally stable and co-exist.

What is the triple point of water?

The triple point of a phase diagram is the location where the solid, liquid, and gas phases meet; it is the temperature and pressure at which a given substance can assume any of the 3 usual phases of matter.

What is represented at triple point of water?

solid, liquid, gas phases in equilibrium

What is the melting of the water?

I believe that the melting of water is at the "triple point" of water, where water exists in the form of ice, liquid water and high vapor pressure water. I could look up where that is but better the inquirer look up triple point because the inquirer has more interest in it than I do right now.
