Less calorie-rich food and more exercise should see you losing weight whether you're on Depakote or not. The warnings for Depakote states that keeping hydrated will be a bit more important when working out than if you weren't on the medicine. Apparently it might also affect your reaction time, so you might want to avoid team sports and ball games. Can't see any objections against jogging, swimming, aerobics classes etc though.
But for a better quality answer - ask the Doctor Who precribed the Depakote if there is anything special you should consider.
honestly, i don't think you can.
i was on it and i wasn't able to eat.
if i did, i vomited. but somehow i
went from 125 to 150 in just under two months.
oddly, only a few days after using it
my weight dropped back again and i was
able to eat all the stuff i used to eat.
strange, ay?
I was on Depakote from age 6-13 and I gained weight throughout that entire process. Once I was taken off Depakote I was able to loose some of the weight though puberty didn't help me at all in that area. It wasn't until I was 17 and taking Topamax that I really started to loose the weight but then went from 165lbs to 125lbs in 2 weeks and was stick skinny and losing my hair I had to be on prenatal vitamins to increase my lack of vitamins from the topamax. I wouldn't necessarily suggest topamax for losing weight while trying to control seizures. I have found Keppra to be the best choice but your side effects may be different with Topamax.
You don't need to take anything to lose weight, that can be done simply by NOT taking things instead. Eat less and healthier.
Although it is a very common side effect, not every patient will gain weight while taking Depakote.
Exercise
no, they are the same drug just different release profile.
In the two years since I began taking Tegretol, I have gained nearly two stone; but I am also on HRT, which I believe can also make one prone to weight-gain. So I think with me it is a combination.
Yes... it's supposed to. But in my son's case he never did.
Yes, many but ask your doctor.
Tell the doctor immediately if you experience weight gain. I had this happen to me with Seroquel.
yes you can always gain weight
Seroquel is definitely the weight gainer. I've been on and off Depakote before with very little weight fluctuation, however with Seroquel I had not only a huge appetite that forced me to eat more, but I put on 20lbs in 2 weeks! I was really not into Seroquel at first, but it really did help with my mania.
It's the depakote that causes weight gain! Have your doctor find something else to replace it.
Depakote will make you gain weight. watch out for your white cell count in your blood ,and damage to the liver. Over all I have been on Depakote for ten years and have gained 40 pounds after having brain surgery. I want to get off of it, but tried other medications, and they sucked.I get burning in my stomach and wish there was a way to diet , for everytime you take the pill it makes your stomach burn.
You can always gain weight by eating too much of something. But greens are very good for you.
You may gain several pounds the first week. Make sure you excersice daily and keep lots of fruits and veggies on hand. It can be a wonderfull medicine so it is worth trying.
