Please consult your doctor if you have started having frequent headaches, if you cannot relieve the headache, or if pain persists despite using common headache medications. Go to an E.R. if you have "the worst headache you've ever had" (extremely severe), or if you have nausea, vomiting, or other symptoms along with the severe headache.

This Community provides suggestions on how to get rid of a headache. However, what works for one person may not work for another person.

  1. You may have gotten the headache from not drinking enough water. Even slight dehydration can cause a headache, with or without stomach pain. One quick help for any dehydration is canned chicken soup; the sodium and other electrolytes will help. Drink some Gatorade or Pedialyte for quick electrolyte replacement.
  2. Eat something--a lot of times low blood sugar contributes to headaches. Try a peanut butter sandwich which will help steady the blood sugar over several hours and drink a mildly sugared drink--but limit caffeine! Jello can give some sugar and electrolytes. IF no other options, eat 1 candy bar to immediately push up your blood glucose. IF diabetic, make sure you check your BS level.
  3. Rest in a dark, quiet room and try to relax or sleep.
  4. Rest in a dark quiet room with a fan blowing.
  5. Limit and try to stay away from noise.
  6. Practice relaxed deep breathing.
  7. Rub your temples with mild pressure. It shouldn't be uncomfortable to do so. If it is, put less pressure or stop rubbing.
  8. Wet a wash cloth or rag in TEPID WARM water and place it at the back of the neck. This can help relieve muscle spasms that can cause headaches.
  9. Wet a wash cloth or rag in TEPID WARM water and place it across your forehead and eyes. NOTE: Very hot water brings blood flow to an area---which can increase a headache. Cold water can also increase the pain.
  10. SOME people find an ice pack helps.
  11. You can try cutting a lime in half and rubbing it on your forehead.
  12. Go to the drug store and buy "Pain Be Gone" and if you don't see the one for headaches ask your pharmacist.
  13. Try your best to get as much stress out of your life as possible as this can cause headaches or migraines.
  14. Take up Yoga as it relaxes you and take time out for yourself at least one hour each day or more if you can.
  15. Chiropractic doctors can help if the headache originates from structural problems.
  16. I've found that walking generally helps. The only issue I have with this solution is that if temperatures outside are too high, it can worsen the matter, and simply getting up and moving is difficult.

Stay hydrated- a major cause of migraines and headaches is dehydration- Gatorade is your best friend. Try to sleep and stay away from any bright lights or loud noises. If it's extremely severe see a doctor.
