How do these forces explain the movement of the continents?
Why does your car shake when you turn it off?
Movements in your car's motor causes your car to move slightly from side to side. When the engine is running, the movements are so fast that the car is balanced - it doesn't have a chance to move to one side before the opposite force moves it back the other way. When you turn the engine off, these forces slow down and as the engine stops running the forces from side to side get slower until they actually move the car for a moment - and it shakes from one side to the other until the engine stops.

Asked in Battle of Gettysburg
Why was Gettysburg a battle?
Union forces, looking for Lee's troops, once they learned of Lee's departure from Virginia, stumbled upon Confederate forces who were scavenging for supplies, particularly shoes, which they learned were in a warehouse near the train depot. Neither side expected to find the other there. It was what is known as a Battle of Opportunity.

What is lateral slipping plate movement?
Sometimes tectonic plates neither move towards or away from each other, but side by side each other. This is known as lateral slipping and forms transform faults. The movement of the lateral slipping of tectonic plates is rigid and so the plates stick until the pressure and friction (stored energy) builds up to a level which forces the plates to slip. This slip releases the immense stored energy and forms energy waves, known as earthquakes.
