Erasumus "Deaf" Smith was nicknamed "Deaf" (pronounced Deef) because he got sick in his early 20's which rendered him a severe hearing loss. He did not know sign language or anything like that, but everyone at the time knew that he could not hear that well. He was very well-known, looked up to, and respected.
