Many US Civil War historians trace the Southern conviction that offensive operations were preferred to tactical defense to the Mexican American War. In that war, US offensive actions proved to be effective against Mexican armies. Confederate generals ignored the success of tactical defenses in the Mexican War and thus placed great faith in offensive assaults in the US Civil War.

∙ 6y agoThe Confederate offensive operations were primarily based on several factors. For the most part they were logical strategic operations. Many were counter attacks to recover lost territory to Union offensive successes. Also, Southern generals often were overly optimistic about their chances of victory in an offensive action. In addition, it was seen as necessary to recover lost logistics resources and restore morale. This morale issue also impacted Southern civilians.
