Because the Christian worldview began to replace the Roman worldview. Also because barbarians were attacking ALL THE TIME during the dark ages and people had no time to study science,as they were usually too busy defending themselves and barely scraping by. That is also why there are not many paintings or sculptures from that era. But,monks in monasteries were living their lives away from those things,so they had everyday to copy books and bibles. so after all,learning did not die out completely at that time.
