What are ancient Mesopotamian names?

An Ancient Mesopotamian OnomastikonThe following list contains a number of original names from Sumerian, Babylonian and Assyrian sources. They belonged to normal people or city officials rather than kings. Names of kings and gods are easily found, on the net and elsewhere, but the purpose of this list is giving a selection of everyday names which can be used in role playing. A number of names are composed with the names of gods - it should be possible to obtain even more names by swapping the names of gods (Nanna, Sin, Enlil etc). Often the god's name in the name of the father is repeated in the name of the son.A big thank you goes out to Mesannepada, who kindly started off this collection by supplying name lists from literature. Where is frankincense is found?

Frankincense was reintroduced to Europe by Frankish Crusaders. Although it is better known as "frankincense" to westerners, the resin is also known as olibanum, which is derived from the Arabic al-lubān (roughly translated: "that which results from milking"), a reference to the milky sap tapped from the Boswellia tree. Some have also postulated that the name comes from the Arabic term for "Oil of Lebanon" since Lebanon was the place where the resin was sold and traded with Europeans. Compare with Exodus 30:34, where it is clearly named levonah, meaning either "white" or "Lebanese" in Hebrew. The lost city of Ubar, sometimes identified with Irem in what is now the town of Shisr in Oman, is believed to have been a centre of the frankincense trade along the recently rediscovered "Incense Road". Ubar was rediscovered in the early 1990s and is now under archaeological excavation. The Greek historian Herodotus was familiar with Frankincense and knew it was harvested from trees in southern Arabia. He reports, however, that the gum was dangerous to harvest because of poisonous snakes that lived in the trees. He goes on to describe the method used by the Arabians to get around this problem, that being the burning of the gum of the styrax tree whose smoke would drive the snakes away. The resin is also mentioned by Theophrastus and by Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis Historia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frankincense

Why did Sir Francis Drake want to explore?

Sir Francis Drake was an English pirate, famous for sinking Spanish ships. His greatest claim to fame was leading several attacks against the Spanish and, as vice-admiral in command of the English fleet, he was instrumental in defeating the Spanish Armada as it attempted to invade England. He was a skilled seaman, and this skill was put to use later.Drake's other major accomplishment was that he was the first Englishman to circumnavigate the world. On this voyage, undertaken between 1577 and 1580, he discovered that Tierra del Fuego, to the south of the Straits of Magellan, was not part of a southern continent (then thought of as Terra Australis, but not to be confused with the later Terra Australis which became Australia). The belief that the lands were connected had limited sea exploration, but Drake's discovery that Tierra was an archipelago later led to the realisation that ships would be able to sail around the bottom of South America, south of Tierra. This became the Cape Horn route which was ultimately discovered in 1616, though not by Drake.During this voyage, Drake also discovered that Java was not part of the southern continent that it was previously thought to be, but an island. He also took tobacco and potatoes back home with him.

What are the meanings of the names of Adam Seth Enos Cainan Mahalaleel Jared Enoch Methuselah Lamech and Noah?

It appears to be prophecy!Possible translation: MANKIND - POSSESSED - FEEBLE, FRAIL, MORTAL - SORROW - THE BLESSED GOD - COMES DOWN - TO INSTRUCT - HIS DEATH SHALL BRING - THE DESPAIRING - COMFORT AND REST.Possible meanings:Adam: "man, humanity, humankind"Seth: "possessed, appointed"Enosh: "mortal, feeble, frail"Cainan: "sorrow"Mahalalel: "The blessed God"Jared: "shall come down, a descent"Enoch: "teaching, to instruct, to initiate or discipline, dedicate, train up"Methuselah: "his death shall bring"Lamech: "the despairing"Noah: "comfort, rest"These names form the beginning of Jesus' genealogical line through Adam's son Seth (see Luke 3:36-38). The names are Hebrew (Old Test. was orig. Hebrew) & derived from Hebrew root words (which requires a decent root study to understand). As with most Bible lessons, be sure to research everything, check the source & pray the Spirit of God will lead you.Salvation is found in Jesus Christ alone, he loves you. He died for your sins, he was buried & he rose again on the 3d day as the Scriptures say. He calls us to repent and to put our faith in him. He will one day return!ANswer #2Unlike today, where dictionaries have given word fixed meanings, back then words in common usage sometimes had obscure or changing meaning these therefore are a best guess:Adam: Earth/Soil (he was formed by God from the ground) it also has a generic meaning for "human" as all people are descended from himSeth: Placed or AppointedEnos: MortalCainan: Smith/Artificer, one who makes thingsMahalaleel: Praise/Glory of GodJared: DescentEnoch: Dedicated or disciplinedMethuselah: Man of the SpearLamech: Servant of God, one who makes pleas to GodNoah: One who brings restIt should be noted these Hebrew words are derived from other languages. Adam is derived from the Egyptian Atum which means the first creation of God. It was likely during the Babylonian captivity the Hebrews changed this name to Adam. Most other Hebrew words are derived from Aincent Sumer/First dynasty Egypt the language of the world before the fall of the tower of Babel. Enoch is generally considered to be short for Emunderanki or Enmendurana which is Sumerian for the king of the two meeting places. He also has his own epic in which he is taken to heaven by God to bring knowledge back to man and returns a second time to heaven never to be seen again. It has been thought that these names are not an exhaustive list of all men during the first bronze age but a royal bloodline. Hence the names only list one son per father and no women. The Sumerian king list includes similar names that begin with the "man" Enki A-lulim who ruled form Eridug a land south of the Garden of Eden in Iraq and ends with Enoch "Enmendurana" who was the last to rule is Sippur where ancient temples to Elohim (the name of God in Genesis) have been discovered. and lastly Enoch's son Ubar-tutu who ruled until "the flood swept over the land" Note in the bible Methuselah died the same year the flood swept over. At which point the "the kingship again descended from heaven" to their version of Noah. It is likely these people were taught to Abraham as a Child in Ur and he passed on this history of human kings to his children, but did not Diefy them as the other Sumerians did. It was this system of Ancestor worship that Abraham rejected in favor of worshiping only the creator or head of the Sumerian Pantheon, El (Elohim) but not human patriarchs.
