The dust bowl mainly occured becasue of Drought and poor farming conditions. In the 1930's many farmers were plowing too much land. So as it occured no rain had come and everything has seemed to just go dry.

NASA now belives that the Jet Stream was partly responsible. Deforestation, bad weather, overuse of the land for agriculture and poor cultivation techniques all contributed to the dust bowl in the U.S.

Greetings,

When dealing with weather, climate, and most significant problems for that matter, the answer is almost always a MULTIFACTORAL problem or multiple source cause.

This being said the primary problem was poor farming practices.

  1. Continuous row cropping
  2. Not using strip cropping in the hills
  3. Molboard plowing [erosion and plow pan problems]
  4. Ill suited genetics
  5. Not using lime to correct Ph problems
  6. Over grazing
  7. Burning woodlots

Many of these practices led to a vicious cycle of,

  1. Stressed crops
  2. tremedous incect problems

Without healthy crops with deep roots to "pump water" out of the ground and add it to the air. Entire weather patterns changed. leading to the "Dust Bowl".

We are currently seeing similar problems in the Amazon Rainforest and the Growth of the Sahara Desert both due to plant reduction

Lesson that should be learned Man can't govern himself, or doesn't seem to learn from previous mistakes.

  1. The Dust Bowl, also known as the Dirty Thirties, was a period of severedust storms that greatly damaged the ecology and agriculture of the US and Canadian prairies during the 1930s; severe drought and a failure to apply dryland farming methods to prevent wind erosion (the Aeolian processes) caused the phenomenon.

drought and over use killed all the grass and made it disappear. with just the topsoil exposed, high winds picked up the loose dirt and whirled it for miles, destroying everything.
