Syria was a French Colony when the war began. When France was invaded & defeated by Germany, then Syria came under the control of the Vichy French government which was an ally of Germany (Hitler). The Vichy French in Syria did very little to help Hitler, because they were too distant from where Germany was fighting. The British military in the Middle East defeated the Vichy French forces in Syria early in the war, thereafter…
Syria and Israel are in a de jure state of war, since the Syrian declaration of war with Israel in 1948 was never supplemented by a peace treaty. However, Syrian and Israeli forces have not engaged militarily since the Lebanese Civil War in the early 1980s. Syria currently is engaged in a civil war and has more important things to worry about than Israel.
What is today called Syria was, at that time, part of the Ottoman Governate of Damascus. Syria is currently in the midst of a civil war. The Syrian Government is opposing a variety of independent Rebel groups. Some of the Rebels are aligned with Al-Qaeda and some are pro-democratic. If the United States begins any strike on Syria (limited or not) it will be the first foreign opponent in the Syrian Civil War (aside from Rebel groups that have cross-border support with Iraq).

As in the Iran-Iraq war of 1980-1988, Israel is doing its utmost to stay uninvolved in what is happening in Syria (as of 2014). Israel's only interest is in protecting its own borders and citizens, and so far none of the three sides in Syria have moved to threaten Israel (other than through rhetoric).
