Wow, there are a number of things. I really would have to test drive it to know what is going on, but let's talk about a couple of possible reasons. It could be the transmission torque converter (TC) lock-up clutch is stuck. Among other things that the torque converter does it is the part of the transmission that allows you to come to a stop while the vehicle is still in drive, without you having to shift it into neutral everytime. If the TC lock-up clutch is stuck in an applied position, you lose that "freewheeling" capability, thus the engine will shut off, unless you put the trans selector into neutral. Another possibilty is you may have a faulty Idle Air Control (IAC), and/or a gummed up trottle body. It may be that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) can't properly control the idle speed because of one of those conditions, and the engine is shutting off due to a low-idle condition. Another possibility is a vacuum leak. A vacuum leak will cause the PCM to have a hard time controling the idle, and the added burden of putting the vehicle into gear, is enough to cause it to shut off. Just a couple of quick things I can think of off the top of my head.
There is a cdoe programed in to the vans "brain" and it is telling you that there is something wrong. i have fixed this in a 1994 Aerostar. The dealer will know what to do from there.
There are a couple of reasons a 1991 Chevrolet Caprice may stall out. The car may need a new distributor cap or the plugs may need changed. A mechanic will be able to determine the causes of the stalling car.
Too the best of my knowledge, no. The 1991 used a sealed beam and the 1997 used a halogen type.

The price varies for a head gasket by location for a 1991 Ford Aerostar van. The approximate price for the head gasket if you are going to do all repairs yourself is approximately $80.00.
I would start with replacing the fuel filter if you haven't already done so. Then check the fuel pump.
Yes, both the 3.0 and the 4.0 are fuel injected.
It could be fuel related such as a weak fuel pump, plugged fuel filter, water in fuel, bad fuel pressure regulator,
Your torque converter clutch is locked up which is usually a solenoid failure.
The automatic transmission is an A4LD in a 1991 Ford Explorer
Most are automatic.
1991-1996 Ranger automatic transmissions use Mercon type automatic transmission fluid.
Does it turn over? Does it have spark? Fuel?
