Here's a theory. First, you have to realize that until fairly recently, bringing a human baby to birth was extremely difficult and dangerous. In order to sustain a human population, people had to be "encouraged" to have intercourse as frequently as possible.

Therefore, the human ability to create a fetish is very useful from a reproductive standpoint. It's not too different from the way bower birds "decorate" their nests to attract a mate. No telling where that ability got started, but as a result people who might not have had much luck attracting a mate now had another asset: their feet, perhaps, or an article of clothing. Common fetishes include various body parts, the smell of perspiration, and even things that aren't part of a body, like high heeled shoes or leather. In recent times, a fetish for latex has emerged -- proof that we still have the ability to create fetishes.

A fetish may be seen as an excessive attraction to some body part, or an attraction to something that is not normally thought of as sexual -- like silk underwear. Fetishes only become troublesome if they interfere with activities of normal daily living, or if the attraction becomes obsessive. For example, if someone is attracted to rubber pants and spends so much money on buying them that they have trouble paying their rent, the attraction is obsessive.
