An erection is a semi-automatic feature of males.

For instance. There are times he can prevent one by thinking of something else. Other times while he may not want one he will get one anyway.

Breathing is like this. Its automatic, but we can also control it to some degree. Heart beat is different. Part of the Autonomics systems. When you sleep you never need to think to breath. The brain is smart about these things.

A nice perfume can also work.

Medication, beer, wine, smoking, and a long list of stuff. Even recent ejaculation all prevent them. Note that at any given moment of time about half the males you pass by have recently ejaculated. Within hours or so.
