Some dogs chatter their teeth when they are excited about a female in heat. My dogs do this when they are around a female that has gone into season. It is somewhat freaky huh? It is so very natural !!no worries.
There could be a number of reasons why.
1) your dog may be cold
2) your dog may have a tooth ache or gum disease
3) your dog may be older (a symptom of old age)
4) he may teeth-chatter before barking. It can be in anticipation, if he is very excited/upset
5) your dog may just like the way it feels/ it may be a habit
6) your dog may have a serious illness like a neurological problem or cognitive disorder (brain illness)
If there are other symptoms, like he appears to be in pain when you touch his cheek, call your vet! (If he is cold, put a sweater on him or turn up the heat in the house!)
The act of a rat grinding it's teeth is referred to as 'bruxing', and they will do this when they are either very contented, or sometimes if they are stressed. If your rat is sitting with you being petted and bruxing away, it is it's way of saying it loves you. If you watch it closely, you may ever see it's eyes 'boggle' which is a side effect of bruxing and happens when it is reeeeally happy.
If they are extremely cold, excited, or scared then their teeth will chatter. If a dog's teeth chatter for more than a few days, it is best to take them to the vet. Sometimes, it could mean that they have a condition in which they experience extreme anxiety. My dogs teeth chatter sometimes, but was because they were experiencing one of the situations mentioned above.
When they cold are sick.
A male dog will test the scent of a females urine to see if she is receptive. He will do this by licking and sniffing where she has urinated. Some males will chatter their teeth as they pass on and process the taste and smell to their olfactory receptors.
It can be from a vitamin deficiency. Try giving your pet a good quality vitamin daily. My dog had this condition and the vitamins stopped the chattering in just a couple of days
Greyhounds chatter their teeth when they are excited.
Visit the vet. It might be a puppy changing its baby teeth, but if the dog is older, a more serious condition could be the cause. Have a vet take a look at it to see what is causing it.

Dogs usually chatter their teeth as a response to being cold. They drool in the presence of food or when they are hungry.
