Abnormal fluid collection in the lungs can be caused by lung infections or heart problems. The biggest problem with it is that it causes shortness of breath that can lead to respiratory arrest.

There are many different things that can cause your lungs to fill with fluid. Some of these things include lung infections, exposure to some toxins, kidney disease, and acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Fluid can enter the lung from a variety of sources. Typically pneumonia which involves infections or chemical trauma. In infections, the invading organisms break down the cells in the lungs. Additionally, the immune system will attempt to destroy the invading organisms and can contribute to the fluid build up.

Fluid in the lungs may cause a bubbling sound in the lungs. If the fluid is inside the lung it is pulmonary edema, if the fluid accumulates on the outside of the lung it is pleural effusion.
