It could definitely be the TPS. I am having TPS problems right now, and if you have a dead cell in your TPS, then when you go to accelerate it could easily just die. Also, if your TPS is running too low, your car could just stall while idling. Its roughly 50 dollars for a new one. If your Check Engine Light has been coming on, it is a good idea to get your codes read too.
If a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am shuts off while in drive, there could be a problem with the passlock sensor. There could also be an issue with the fuel pump.
there is a possibility that your shift linkage is messed up. if not that then it is a sensor.

my 1999 dodge caravan did the same thing and it was the speed sensor gone in it.THE speed sensor is located on top of transmission drivers side. Have it checked for codes, could be major or minor.

Turn the key to the first position, (ign. is still off,) from there put the shifter in neutral, start the car and drive it to your local garage. Could be the sensor on the brake pedal arm.
could be the crank shaft positioning sensor 80 bucksits located on the upper part of the bell of the transmission, drivers side, two screws. been there, done that, good luck, not easy to get to.
