Depends- is the fecal matter from a newborn, a child, an adult, or an animal? In most cases, with the exception of a newborn, the color of fecal matter is directly due to what has been ingested. Since this question is under stomach flu, medications can cause abnormal coloration, as well as the ingestion of mucus from being sick.

Black coloration in the feces is often a sign of an upper gastrointestinal bleed such as bleeding in the esophagus, stomach, or the beginning of the small intestine. Black stool can be nothing, but it can also be serious. It can be as simple as eating too many Oreos, but it can also mean there is blood in the stool. Blood in the stool can be caused by a few things, such as intestinal ulcers. Some medications, such as Pepto Bismol, can also turn stool black. If this happens more than once, it is a good idea to go ahead and talk to your doctor. You may need to be evaluated for other symptoms or problems.
