What causes someone to fall out of bed?

Some people are deeper or more active sleepers than others and simply roll over and fall out without waking. In some people, the sort of paralytic response to sleep that keeps one from acting out vivid dreams is missing, and they thrash about, sleepwalk, or roll out of bed.
