Earthquakes happen along fault-lines. Fault-lines are cracks in the Earths crust that seem to split it. Below the crack, near the Earth's core, is the Focus. But it is too far deep to measure where an earthquake starts. Where we measure is the Epicenter, the area above the Focus.

This moves the crust, and the plates that make it up (see related links for an image of all the plates). Those plates move in different directions, as shown in that image.
