This event is actually caused by a process which occurs at the bottom of the ocean, called "Sea Floor Spreading". What happens is, there are several plates on the ocean floor, which release liquid lava, which cools extremely repidly due to the water, creating more land on the ocean floor, pushing other land that was there, outwards to make space for the new land.
