When the Earth experiences a total solar of lunar eclipse, the shadow of the moon falls on the Earth and on one particular spot. There you can see the total solar or lunar eclipse, but any other place you don't realize it.

The umbra (Latin for "shadow") is the darkest part of the shadow. From within the umbra, the source of light is completely concealed by the occulting body. In astronomy, an observer in the umbra is said to be in the shadows experiencing total eclipse.

When an object is illuminated by a source that is not a point, it casts a shadow that has two areas. One where the light is completely blocked and a ring shaped area around that one where the light is only partially blocked. Theses areas are the umbra and penumbra, respectively. I am going to attach an illustration to better explain. This is a link to a site that has an illustration. My own file wouldn't load.

The shadow formed by the point source of light has a screen blocking it. So it is very precise and only forms an umbra. Whereas the other is not as precise and forms an umbra and a penumbra.

What is the different of umbra and penumbra?

Umbra and penumbra when referred to the moon describes the shadow which is formed when light is blocked from the sun, by the moon. This shadow which falls on the Earth and has two distinct regions; a partially shadowed area which is the penumbra and the centre point a totally dark umbra. We on Earth looking skyward and watching the shadow pass as the Earth revolves would describe the penumbra as a partial eclipse and the umbra as a total eclipse.

What does the umbra and the penumbra have to with with eclipse?

An umbra is formed when an object blocks all of the light from a light source. A penumbra is formed when light from one source is blocked with light from another source filling in some of the shadow, OR when a large light source is only partially blocked. http://www.learner.org/workshops/sheddinglight/highlights/highlights1.html
