Well.... one of the many changes that were made to the periodic table was its appearance. It was coloured in in order for people to recognise the different groups. Red for Group 1, orange for Group 2 etc... Hope this helps. Jeremy Eric Slazkowski, Des Moines, Iowa The Periodic Table was first constructed around 1870 when the Russian chemist Dmitry Mendeleyev catalogued all of the known elements. The elements were arranged according to their similarities. More recently discovered elements were added, and the order of elements became based on their atomic numbers. The modern periodic table has much of the same information as the original one by Mendeleyev, but is arranged somewhat like a chart with elements having similar properties falling into columns called groups or families.

Well in a nutshell the major difference is, that Mendeleev's Periodic Table was ordered by atomic weight, not proton number of an element as it is today, since proton number was not even known at the time.

Furthermore, he left blank spaces where he believed the element in question has not yet been discovered, and it is those spaces that were, amongst other things, "changed", or filled in by chemists that came after him.

Those changes were major, I think. Plus the table was tweaked a bit more, its structure, and some information we can find today on a PT has been added later on, too (such as electronegativity).

Best, ck

Mendeleev first arranged the elements in the increasing order of their atomic masses and repeating properties. The elements were later arranged (in the modern Long-form periodic table) in the increasing order of their atomic number and repeating properties.

Mandeleev left gaps for elements not discovered at that time, later on germanium was discovered and a remarkable agreement was found with mandeleev prediction.
