The four basic chemicals that make up living things is water(h20),carbon dioxide(6C02) oxygen(02) and last but not least glucose(C6H12060)

I think the way to formulate the answer to this question is to break down the "chemicals" and list the actual elements that make up 99.9% of all matter, both life supporting and inert matter. People are suprised to learn that the list is as short as it is. That short list is as follows:

Carbon

Hydrogen

Nitrogen

Oxygen

phosphorus

Sulfur
