Malcom X had a strong belief that the black community sat back to much and let the "white society" as he called them, stomp all over them. In his speech he stated that the blacks should be more assertive and stand up for their rights.

Unlike most leaders of the day, he was not a non violence type of leader which became his undoing.

Yes he was considered that. He joined the Nation Of Islam and that encouraged many people to do so, such as Cassius Clay (Muhammed Ali). But he mostly fought for freedom and blacks' rights.
