That depends on exactly what degree you are looking for. You can get a degree in veterinary technology or a degree in veterinary medicine. These are 2 very different degrees.

The degree in veterinary medicine is a 4 year degree with a specific set of courses that must be completed. The class names will vary from college to college, but you can find a list of the curriculum listed on the college/university websites that offer degree program. Before applying to a college of veterinary medicine you must already have a 4-year (bachelors) degree in an acceptable associated area such as Biology. A degree in veterinary medicine is required in order to be licensed or practice as a veterinarian.

A degree in veterinary technology can be earned in 2-4 years, depending on the type of degree sought. Most states require a 2 year (associates) degree in order to work as a veterinary technician, but there are several colleges that offer 4 year (bachelors) degree programs. Again, the names of courses required for this degree will vary from college to college so you would need to look at the courses required for the particular college you wanted to attend.

There are a wide variety of classes needed - calculus, zoology, microbiology, physics, biochemistry, finance, computer skills, etc. That is actually a partial list of pre-requisite courses you need to take before applying to vet school. In vet school, classes cover anatomy, physiology, histology, epidemiology, technical skills, communication skills, etc.

Veterinary technicians are required (in most states) to have a 2 year degree in veterinary technology from an AVMA accredited veterinary technology program, to have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam and a state exam in order to be credentialed. They are also generally required to attend a set number of continuing education courses each year to keep up with changes in veterinary medicine. Veterinary technicians are educated in veterinary anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, animal husbandry, surgical assisting, anesthesia, medical nursing, diagnostics such as radiology and ultrasonography, clinical pathology, parasitology, medical terminology and record keeping, biological collection and sample handling and preperation, etc. They can also specialize in areas such as emergency and critical care, internal medicine, anesthesia, dentistry, behavior and equine nursing.

The exact titles of the courses will vary from school to school, but the AVMA sets out a list of criteria, including topics covered, to be met before a school is accredited.

The main class you need is Chemistry (In the UK) despite what you have been told Biology is not necessary to become a vet however does significantly increase your chance of getting into a good university of veterinary such as Cambridge or the Royal Veterinary College. It is also good to have Maths. The best subjects to have would be: Maths, Chemistry and Biology for your A-levels and then maybe further maths or physics as well depending on what you enjoy or even a totally different subject.
