Only Nine Division I men's basketball teams have finished their season with a perfect record since the start of the NCAA tournament in 1939 - Seven of which won the NCAA title. Here a breakdown.

1955-56 San Francisco 29-0

San Francisco was the powerhouse of the period with Bill Russell and Hal Perry leading the way. The NCAA final 83-71 victory over Iowa clinched the Dons' second straight crown and ran their unbeaten streak to 55 games. All-American guard K.C. Jones was ineligible for the NCAA tournament but San Francisco continued its run - which started in the regular season where it had not won by less than seven points.

1956-57 North Carolina 32-0

The North Carolina Tar Heels crowned off their undefeated campaign by holding Kansas' Wilt Chamberlain to just 13 points in a 54-53 triple-overtime thriller. Joe Quigg made two free throws with six seconds left in the third extra session to give UNC the title. Head coach Frank McGuire's Tar Heels had beaten Michigan State a night earlier in triple-overtime as well. All-American Lennie Rosenbluth, North Carolina's leading scorer during the season at 28 ppg, fouled out with 1:45 left in regulation.

1963-64 UCLA 30-0

This was the start of a magical run for the UCLA Bruins under head coach John Wooden, who would eventually be known as the "Wizard of Westwood". UCLA beat Duke 98-83 for its first NCAA title, which would become 10 championships in 12 years. Player of the Year Walt Hazzard scored 11 points while Gail Goodrich had 27 points and Kenny Washington collected a career-high 26 points and 12 rebounds in the win.

1966-67 UCLA 30-0

Title number three for UCLA came pretty easily as Wooden's men cruised past Dayton 79-64 in the final. The championship started UCLA's seven-year reign over College Basketball. It was also the first of three straight crowns for Lew Alcindor - later known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The team also featured Lucius Allen and Mike Warren. Interesting, the dunk was banned after the 1967 season - primarily due to Alcindor's dominance.

1971-72 UCLA 30-0

This was year six of coach John Wooden's seven consecutive titles. And the Bruins cruised through the regular season, winning by an average of 32 points per game. In addition to Bill Walton, UCLA also featured Keith Wilkes, Swen Nater and Henry Bibby. UCLA actually struggled to put away Florida State in the NCAA final, winning only 81-76 in the L.A. Sports Arena.

1972-73 UCLA 30-0

The final of seven straight NCAA titles for UCLA - and nine in 10 years - ended in an 87-66 blasting of Memphis. The Bruins's amazing 88-game winning streak went through both 1972 and 1973 title runs - making UCLA the first school to post back-to-back unbeaten season. In the final, Bill Walton made 21 of 22 shots in collecting 44 points and 13 rebounds.

1975-76

Indiana 32-0Indiana finished off a great two-year run with a 1976 title for coach Bob Knight, who led his team to an 86-68 victory over Big Ten rival Michigan in the final. Scott May and Kent Benson combined for 51 points and Quinn Buckner had a great all-around showing. The Hoosiers, who out-scored their opponents by an average of 17.3 points, knocked off 1975 national champions UCLA Bruins to get to the title game.

Undefeated But...

The 1953-54 Kentucky Wildcats went 25-0 but turned down an NCAA tournament invitation after three players were ruled ineligible for the event

The North Carolina State Wolfpack was 27-0 in 1972-73 but was barred from the NCAA tournament that year for recruiting violations.

Close But No Cigar

Larry Bird's 1979 Indiana State Sycamores lost to Magic Johnson's Michigan State Spartans in the NCAA final for their first loss of the season.

The University of Nevada at Las Vegas - UNLV - was on course for perfection in 1991 but lost to Duke in the NCAA semi-finals.
