The National Guard killed four students at Kent State University but all were not black and I don't think any were. A short time later two black students were killed at Jackson State University under similar conditions while rioting in protest of the Kent State killings.

Mary Jane McLeod Bethune, who, in 1938 was appointed to Director of the Division of Negro Affairs, which was a branch of the National Youth Administration. The NYA was an agency that created works programs and aided youths in finding employment and furthering their education. Bethune's primary responsibility was issuing funds to black students for college.
A number of laws and rules evolved over the years separating black and white people. Then a well researched book, An American Dilemma, claimed that segregation prevented equality. College students read it and became determined to end segregation. Black people were not allowed to sit at the same lunch counters as white people. Black students wanting equality knew they had to start somewhere and decided to attack that rule. They started by sitting at the white lunch counter.

It is a "historically" black school, which is not quite the same thing. However, while there are white students, they're a very small minority; Grambling's own website says that black students make up over 90% of the student body.

Fisk College is known as a college for African American students. It is located in Nashville, Tennessee. While most of the students are black, other nationalities are allowed to apply and attend if they choose.
We do not have the exact number, but a look at his college yearbook from Harvard Law School shows there were enough to have a Black Law School Students Association, of which he was a member.

Texas A&M is located in College Station, Texas. There is another branch in Prairie View, Texas where the black students went back in the day when there was segregation--which is not just for black students any longer.
