When the original 10 miles square (100 square miles) were ceded to make the federal district, the land came from both the Commonwealth of Virginia and the state of Maryland.

In Virginia the city of Alexandria was originally part of DC, however, in 1846 it retroceded and returned back to the Commonwealth.

In Maryland the city of Georgetown was included.
