What two colors mix together and make purple?

The result will vary depending whether you are refering to subtractive or additive mixing of colours. If you were to mix dark purple paint with yellow paint for example you would get a brownish colour. This is because the more colours you add, the less light that is reflected to your eyes. Since blue and red make purple, and the three primary colours of paint are red, blue and yellow; mixing all three will cause very little light to be reflected resulting in a brown colour. If all three red, blue and yellow were perfect, and in the exact same quantities the paint would appear black. However, if you were to mix a purple light source, with a yellow one, the result would be a fairly white light with a reddish tinge. The three primary colours of light are red, green and blue. Mixing red and blue light will give you purple. Mixing red and green will result in yellow. Mixing all three will produce white light and since all three primary colours are present, this will be the case here. However, since red light is present in both magenta (purple) and yellow light, there will be more red than the others (depending on the frequencies of each, thus givng the white light a red tint.
