Robins (where I live in New York, at any rate) are generally brown with a red underbelly. There may be different species with different colorations, but I believe that the Red Breasted Robin is the most common.

The loss of feathers on a hens back although not pretty to look at is not usually bad. You can separate the hen from the rooster for awhile and the feathers will grow back.

For example, their cones on the top of their head might be bigger, they might have longer tail feathers, and they might have a broader chest. They might be more aggressive, or even start to rooster when they are young. if they rooster, they are a rooster- and it is loud and might be obnoxious.
