early in the war both sides wore many and sometimes colorful unifroms (see Zouaves) but in time the South was gray in theory and butternut in use and the the Union was blue, dark top and lighter pants.

The Union uniforms were predominantly dark blue, but there were lots of variation. Some had gray, some had green some of them even had reds and green and white fancy uniforms with red fez!
