Although known to be black and white, Boston Terriers are rarely truly black and white. They will typically always have at least a small patch of brindling somewhere on their body. To that end, Boston Terriers also come in brindle (tiger stripes) and white. Additionally, they come in lemon (light tan) and white and red, liver, or seal and white. However, lemon, red, liver, and seal are considered genetic abnormalities and not accepted in the show ring. These abnormal colors are now being bred and marketed as "rare" but it should be noted that historically, when a single trait is genetically selected for without taking into consideration the health of the animal(s) as a whole, the offspring have a higher likelihood of having additional health issues. Some examples in other breeds would be "lethal Aussies" where they are bred to be white, but common birth defects include deafness and blindness. The same goes for blue merle Great Danes.
