Schist is more of a texture versus a color. A schist is a type of metamorphic rock. What makes a rock fit into the schist category is the orientation of the mineral crystals in the rock. They can be most any color. A large portion of them are dark in color being black, grey or greenish because of the minerals that exist under metamorphic conditions.

Most shale is gray. Other colors of shale would include black, red, green, yellow, and brown. Shale's color will vary depending on the percentage of organic matter and on the presence of minor mineral constituents (ex: limonite, goethite, hematite, chlorite, biotite).
