Green sea turtles are called such due to the chlorophyll in their diet from eating seaweed, which turns their fat layer very green. They also have a love for squid, octopus, and really seem to enjoy eating jellyfish. The scutes (plates) on their backs are brown with varying shades of golds and occasionally green in a sunburst pattern. The shells are made of keratin and grows with the animals. Green turtles are not endangered every where. In Hawaii the population has made such a wonderful comeback it has been delisted to threatened. They are seen in shallow areas feasting on seaweeds and resting on the coral reefs and area also known for traveling long distances across very deep oceans to nesting grounds in the western archipelago. Mating in Hawaiian waters can be in very deep waters and can last for hours.
Turtles vary in color but, usually darker shades of green and brown with lighter spots. Heads and feet are brown.
