when net solute concentrations are equal on both sides of a semi permeable membrane its called isotonic
An isotonic solution.
isotonic
Isotonic
The water will move towards the higher solute concentration until both sides are isotonic.
"Water ALWAYS follows the salt" or to put it another way, it will try to make the two sides have equal amounts of water. The water will go where there are more solute particles. Water easily passes from one side to the other by simple osmosis.
Osmosis is the term for the diffusion of solute through a membrane from a place of higher concentration to a place of lower concentration. The process of osmosis will continue until the concentration is equal on both sides of the membrane.
Osmotic pressure is the force exerted by the movement of solvent molecules across a semipermeable membrane from an area of lower solute concentration to an area of higher solute concentration. This movement equalizes the concentration on both sides of the membrane. The osmotic pressure is directly proportional to the concentration of solute particles in the fluid.
Diffusion of fluid through a semipermeable membrane from a solution with a low solute concentration to a solution with a higher solute concentration until there is an equal concentration of fluid on both sides of the membrane
Diffusion of fluid through a semipermeable membrane from a solution with a low solute concentration to a solution with a higher solute concentration until there is an equal concentration of fluid on both sides of the membrane .
The solute concentration is equal on both sides of the cell membrane
movement of a solvent (as water) through a semipermeable membrane (as a living cell) into a solution of higher solute concentration that tends to equilize the concentration of solute on the two sides of the membrane.
Yes. Osmosis is a type of diffusion involving the movement of water through a semipermeable membrane from a solution with a low solute concentration to a solution with a high solute concentration, until the concentration of fluids on both sides of the membrane is equivalent.

Diffusion- This is the movement of substances from an area of high concentration to low concentration. Diffusion can be sped up by heat and by increasing the concentration of the diffusing substances. Osmosis-This is the movement of water down a concentration gradient across a semi-permeable membrane. Water crosses the membrane down its concentration gradient, from the side with the lower solute solution to the side with the higher solute solution. This is therefore making the lower solute solution more concentrated, while also diluting the higher solute concentration solution. Osmosis will carry on until equilibriium is reached which is said to be isotonic, when both sides have reached their equal concentrations. Emms B x
If place in a hypertonic solution it would swell and/or burst because to much water is getting in the cell from the hypertonic solution ( osmosis ). If placed in a hypotonic solution it will end up shrinking from the water leaving the cell to the hypotonic solution ( again osmosis ). Osmosis is when water moves to a lower pressure of water so if there's more water pressure in the cell it will move out into the less dense solution. :)
Osmosis is controlled by the difference in solute concentration between a semi-permiable membrane. The membrane is too small for the solute to pass through to reach equilibrium, but water is small enough to go through, so it passes through the membrane and equilibrates the concentration of the solute on both sides. This process is driven by the positive change in entropy.
