For the posterior pituitary gland the hypothalamus manufactures the hormones which travel down the axon from the cell body to be secreted in the blood- although the posterior secretes hormones it does not make any hormones. The anterior pituitary gland receives its 'instructions' from the hypothalamus in form of releasing factors, carried down the infundibulum in the blood.
